COLL-518 Carpenter Family Fonds

The Carpenter Family fonds consists of diaries, photographs, and genealogical material relating to members of the Carpenter family. The diaries were written by Charles Carroll Carpenter in 1844-1918, Charles Lincoln Carpenter in 1890-1910, and Nancy Feronia (Rice) Carpenter in 1862-1863.

The majority of the diaries were written by Charles C. Carpenter depicting his life and travels from adolescence to adulthood. Carpenter was a Congregational missionary, writer, historian and medical researcher who spent time in Québec-Labrador primarily between the years of 1856-1909. The diaries include descriptions of places and people that Carpenter interacted with, including the local Indigenous populations. Carpenter is known as "the first and oldest friend in the United States of Dr. Wilfred Grenfell and the Labrador children." He maintained a relationship with Dr. Grenfell and the International Grenfell Association until his death in 1918.

Members of the Carpenter family are buried on Phillips Academy campus in Andover, Massachusetts.
